It’s a weird mix of the familiar (people talk on cell phones and eat Frosted Flakes), and the horror/sci-fi (ghosts are everywhere and telepaths, palmists, furies and all manner of extrasensory types form an underclass that society has come to fear and hate.) The heroine gets hauled off to a kind of interment camp for specials which is also the home base for the aliens. It’s set in the future but only a few decades into the future. I liked the concept of an alternate history that went off the rails from history as we know it a couple of hundred years ago when England handed itself into the hands of an alien race. But while I made it all the way through this first book, I don’t think I want to spend my time on any more. I was hoping this was the start of another great series I could lose myself in for a few weeks. Samantha Shannon has created a bold new reality in this riveting debut. It also introduces an extraordinary young writer, with huge ambition and a teeming imagination. The Bone Season introduces a compelling heroine - a young woman learning to harness her powers in a world where everything has been taken from her. But if she wants to regain her freedom, Paige will have to learn something of his mind and his own mysterious motives.
